Outdoor events

The end of the outdoor events means I can finally put away my wellington boots!  It’s certainly been a wet season this year.  It rained so hard at The Royal Cornwall Show in June that I had to close my stand for fear of getting flooded and The Festival of British Eventing at Gatcombe was another wet one.  Thunder & Lightening struck overhead and it felt as though we were literally in the eye of the storm  … a bit scary to say the least!

Then it was back to Cornwall for The Camelford Show and even more rain, followed by even more mud.  We couldn’t get the vehicle anywhere near my stand, so finished up carrying all my stock across two fields.

Back home in my studio I realise how much I love these events as I get to meet so many new people and visit so many lovely parts of the Country, but it is really nice to be back in The Corn Hall in Cirencester with my regular spot inside, with lighting, wifi and a nice clean loo!

Gift wrap

It seems that having one less thing to worry about is a real help, as I’m always delighted by the number of customers who opt for gift wrap when placing an order.

Simply add the gift wrap option of £2.50 to any order, decide whether you’d like a message added, and we’ll do the rest. The option is available with every purchase, whether you want it sent to the lucky recipient or directly to you.

In most cases, we use pretty pale grey or silver paper and then add a ribbon to the parcel, finishing it off with a bow.  Bows are definitely not my speciality, but I really try to make them perfect. Sometimes they can take me longer to get right than making the actual piece of jewellery!

Trusted suppliers

In this line of business some of the most important people, (apart from customers!) are the suppliers we use. I have always opted for companies in the UK. I choose companies that I have grown to trust, so that I know whenever I place an order for gemstones, pearls or sterling silver I will always get the best quality products.

In the last few days, one of my favourite suppliers of freshwater pearls has announced that she is retiring. She founded her company in 1975 and I have bought pearls from her for over 10 years. In the same week the company that supplies me with my some of my silver findings has announced that it is closing down.

I wish them the best for the future, but I know that it will take quite a while for me to find new companies to replace them. In the meantime, I will be buying as much stock from them, as I possibly can, before they close their doors!

July birthstone – Ruby

Biba & Rose July birthstone

A Ruby is the birthstone of July.  It is considered to be the king of all gems and represents love, health and wisdom. It was believed wearing a fine red Ruby bestowed good fortune on its owner. A Ruby is the most valuable of gemstones and its value increases depending on its colour and quality.

If a Ruby is a little out of your price range, then a piece of jewellery with a beautiful red crystal is the perfect gift for a July birthday.

Murano Glass jewellery

Those of you who have seen my designs will know that I specialise in freshwater pearls and sterling silver jewellery, but to compliment my range I also use the beautiful Venetian glass from Murano.

“Murano’s reputation as a centre for glass-making was born when the Venetian Republic, fearing fire and destruction of the city’s mostly wooden buildings, ordered glass-makers to move their foundries to Murano in 1291”

I believe that it is truly the most beautiful glass in the world!  I use Murano Glass heart shaped beads, lined with sterling silver or gold and then add them to pearl necklaces and bracelets.  I also make them into earrings and pendants using the most exquisite colours.

Each season I find exciting new colours and this year is no exception.  There is the addition of a beautiful turquoise colour pendant and an aqua, green and white heart, both ideal for your summer wardrobe … https://www.bibaandrose.co.uk/shop/murano-heart-pendants/

I have also added a new set of pearl jewellery including a necklace, bracelet and earrings with gold-lined hearts, which would be perfect bridal jewellery to compliment any wedding dress.

June Birthstone – the pearl

Pearl – the birthstone for June

“Who comes with summer to this earth
And owes to June her hour of birth
A pearl should wear against her skin
Who’s innocence many a heart shall win.”

For those who were born in the month of June, pearl is the traditional birthstone. Pearls are associated with the properties of loyalty, faithfulness and friendship.  They are an unusual precious gem in that they technically not gemstones, as they are produced inside a ‘creature’ rather than from a mine in the earth.

The pearl is one of the most ancient and beloved of all gems, and a common belief was that pearls were created when oysters came up to the surface of the ocean to catch drops of rain or dew in their shells. These drops from the heavens would then harden, by the influence of moonlight, into beautiful pearls.

Biba & Rose pearls are predominantly made using freshwater pearls rather than those from the ocean, but they are still grown inside an oyster and still have the most beautiful qualities.

Our selection of freshwater pearl jewellery starts from as little as £12, making the June birthstone a perfect affordable gift.

May birthstone

The Emerald
“Who first beholds the light of day
In spring’s sweet, flower month of May
And wears an Emerald all her life
Shall be a loved and a loving wife.”

May birthdays fall right in the heart of spring, and the emerald is the birthstone for those born in the month of May.  It has the rich green colour of spring and a beautiful vivid tone.  Emeralds are considered to be a symbol of rebirth and love.

The Biba & Rose birthstone pendant for May has an emerald green Swarovski crystal on a sterling silver chain – from £20

Cirencester Corn Hall

Cirencester Corn Hall

Biba & Rose at The Corn Hall

Every Thursday I have a stand in The Corn Hall in Cirencester.  The busy Corn Hall Market is a regular venue for many small businesses, and if you’ve never been to Cirencester before, I would definitely recommend a visit…

Cirencester is quite a large town which is often referred to as the Capital of the Cotswolds.  In the centre of the town there is the market place where you can see the Parish Church, which has been recently refurbished and boasts an impressive interior and some beautiful stained glass.

The Corinium Museum is another popular destination.  Here you will find a treasure trove of Roman Artefacts.

Away from the lovely shops and eating places, yet still within easy walking distance, a surprise awaits you as you stroll onto the Bathhurst Estate and into Cirencester Park. This beautiful park is open to the public free of charge, for visitors on foot and on horseback by kind permission of the 9th Earl and Countess Bathurst.

Spring Cleaning!

Generally speaking it’s fair to say that the first three months of the year are by far the quietest in the retail sector.

It gives us a chance to recharge our batteries after the busy Christmas period, and to plan the year ahead.

Although my core range is still as popular as ever I do try to come up with a collection of new designs and this is the ideal time of year to do it.  I also tend to use January and February to update my website (not my favourite job!) and re-order my stationary and packaging.  There is nothing worse than running our of business cards or gift boxes!

A good Spring Clean is also essential too.  My workshop definitely benefits from a real tidy up and I am always amazed at how much easier it is to find things afterwards, and how much more productive I can be!
